TX101 -- TX101 spent more time out of the Big Cypress Seminole Indian Reservation (BCSIR) game pen than in it this period. However, she continues to return to this area at regular intervals. When outside of the pen, her southerly travels took her to within a quarter mile north of I-75. She also travelled east across the L-28 interceptor canal and north across the L-28 feeder canal. Her westerly excursions were up to approximately 2 miles from the pen area. These are all the areas she has previously used byt now traverses them more frequently as she is not burdened with raising kittens.
Florida Panther #65F1 -- As is typical with young dispersing male panthers, #65 has ventured far and wide during the past 3 months keeping us guessing in the plane as to his next move (along with 2 other dispersing age non-F1 males). He essentially made a big loop covering 3 counties: Collier, Hendry, and Lee. In the beginning of April he was in an area basically bounded by SR 29 to the west, County Line road to the east and south of CR 846. On April 13 he was found west of SR 29 in a thicket swamp area surrounded by orange grove but had returned by the next flight to the east side of SR 29. At the end of April he moved about 20 miles to the northwest to an area just south of SR 80. The next flight found him 10 miles west of this location to an area north of Lehigh Acres. By the first week in May he had made his way southwest to within 1/4 mile of I-75 just north of SR 82 (Exit 23). This area is north of the Ft. Myers International Airport and permission to fly in the area had to be obtained to prevent collisions with jumbo jets. By mid May he began to venture back to the east. On one flight he was located on the south bank of the Caloosahatchee River south of the Caloosahatchee River State Park. From here he found himself in the are north of Lehigh Acres again where he stayed until the beginning of June. On June 8th he had made another move towards SR 29 approximately 6 miles south of Labelle. Another move a couple of days later brought him near Goodno south of SR 80. He then travelled east for a ways before heading south to the Rocky Lake area just north of CR 846. From here he travelled back west to the area between County Line road and SR 29 thus completeing his loop.
Florida Panther #66F1 -- This female has essentially remained in the BCSIR game pen near where she was born. She does venture outside of the pen occasionally, doing so 3 times in the past 3 months. She was located with male panther #72 (who likewise spends an unusual amount of time in the pen) during 2 flights. These were a Friday and Monday so presumably the pair was together throughout the weekend also. If anything results from this pairing, she would be expected to den around mid September.
TX 103 -- TX 103 made extensive movements through her home range from Ochopee to Lostman's Pines south of the Loop Road in Big Cypress National Preserve (BCNP). She entered the Loop Unit for the first time in late June. So far there has been no sign of denning from TX 103 but it is likely no males currently pass through her home range.
TX 104 -- TX104 used a portion of the Belle Meade area south of I-75 around Sable Palm Road for most of April. On 4/20/98, during a routine telemetry flight, her collar was found to be in mortalitiy in an orange grove on the south side of Sable Palm Road. Upon investigation she was found ddeceased. A necropsy revealed taht the cause of death was multiple shot-gun wounds. The investigation is still on-going and no further details are available at this time. Although technically a Texas cougar, Florida law protects all Felis concolor occurring in the wild in Florida. This illegal act constitutes a felony of the third degree and a $5,000.00 reward is being offered for information resulting in the arrest of the person(s) involved. TX 104 never produced any kittens.
TX 105 -- This female cougar has been making extensive movements in Everglades National Park (ENP). She has traveled from north of the main Park road in the "400 hammocks" area to the south and west of the Daniel Beard Center. There was a visual observation made of her from the plane on 16 April.
TX 106 -- TX 106 divided her time between the Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge, Fakahatchee Strand State Preserve (FSSP), and Picayune Strand State Forest. She also frequented private lands north and west of the Refuge as well as some west of FSSP. She was with male panther #60 on 2 occasions; 27 April and 11 May. On the morning of 20 April she was "caught" inside the fence of the Ford Test Track. A small crowd of Track employees had gathered causing her to remain against the fence. One person even managed to capture her on video tape. Once the crowd dispersed, she moved off into a section of woods within the confines of the fenced portion of the track. Upon arrival of GFC personnel, she was flushed off the property without incident. (This is also the same day TX 104 was discovered in mortality).
TX 107 -- TX 107 made extensive movements through her home range from the western Corn Dance Unit ot the western Turner River Unit in BCNP with her 2 female offspring, #'s 70 and 71. During the first week in June, the kittens were located away from the female lagging about a half mile behind her. The family unit has been located together since that time however.
TX 108 -- TX 108 has utilized hardwood hammocks in the "400 hammocks" area to the north of the main Park road in ENP. Since her 2 kittens were found in the den on 11 February, 1998, there have not been any visual observations of them. The kittens are presumed to be alive and travelling with their mother.
Florida Panther #61F1 -- Number 61 has predominantly occupied the eastern portion of Long Pine Key in ENP. She has extended her movements from the Rocky Glades area north and west of Homestead General Airport ot the Hole-in-the-Donut area to the south and east of the Daniel Beard Center.
